I remember when I was five years old, I was going through my grandma's closet pulling out different scarves, sweaters, and blouses. Being the curious child I was, I eagerly pulled every treasure I found and wrapped it around me. Now, my grandma was a woman with flair. This meant that each of her clothing item had its own personality. Some of the items I remember pulling out was a huge, red sweater with intricate embroidery, a shiny, pink scarf, and a black, sequin covered cape. When I walked out of that closet, I really thought I looked great and ready to hit the runway. In reality, it was the total opposite. All jokes aside, I learned one thing from this fashion mishap. Statement items are statement items for a reason. They should be emphasized, not hidden by other items that also should be emphasized on their own. If the huge, red sweater with embroidery was worn by itself, trust me, the outfit would have been a 10/10. However, the five year old me believed that it would be fashionable if paired with a bright, pink scarf and a black, sparkly cape. It is the same with texture. While some textures are meant to support statement items, others are meant to be the center of focus. One example of a "supporting texture" ( as I like to call it) would be denim. There is a reason why denim looks good with everything! On the other hand, some "statement textures" would be leather, patent leather, sequins, embroidery, and silk. In my outfit above, I am wearing pants from Korea that has a silky texture to it. I am also wearing a black, cropped tee from Forever 21 to neutralize the outfit and let my pants be the center of focus. As for my shoes, I slipped on my patent leather oxfords to keep the look interesting. My balance of "supporting textures" and "statement textures" allowed me to master the texture of my pants which definitely draws in the eye.

These days culottes are everywhere, found in every store , styled in various ways. Now, many of you guys might regard culottes as those really baggy pants that resemble a skirt, and yes-- this is absolutely correct. However, there is a whole new reason why they are so popular. Culottes stop a little bit over the ankle, which is a place that helps people elongate their legs. I mean, who wouldn't love to add a few inches to their height, even if it is a illusion? I know I definitely love it! In my outfit above, I am styling my Zara black culottes with a simple sweater I purchased from Forever 21. Because culottes are voluminous, the top part of the outfit should have a tighter fit than the pants. I chose my sweater because it gave me a tighter fit but also the option of pulling it out a bit to keep the outfit casual and loose. And as for the shoes, I just slipped on my casual white tennis shoes. These Zara culottes are one of my favorite pieces in my closet. And why is this? It is because it automatically helps me look put together even though I am wearing a simple combo-- shirt and pants. So for those lazy days when I don't feel like trying with my outfit, I always grab for these pants to help me create a look that is effortless but still fashionable. I also love the self-tie belt on these culottes because it helps synch in my waist and adds more the to the outfit.
Culottes mark the comeback of 80's and 90's fashion. Just like how denim and overalls are back on trend, so are culottes. It is definitely one of my favorite trend pieces so far and I would recommend investing in a good pair! Thanks for reading! Love, Chris Xx |
